Debate Two: Immigration
“Do you support the right of people to relocate to another country?”
On the 11th of January 2011, a second debate was held for a mixed group of approximately 23
students. Again, the ratio of male to female students was roughly 50:50. The students attending were from various parts of the Tiaz Governate and they represented a diverse cross-section of Yemeni the populace.
The Debate was run by Hakim British Council Trainer and chaired by David van Doesburgh, a Barrister from the UK, currently teaching at Mohammed Ali Othman School in Taiz. It was also attended by Elizabeth Reeb German teaching in AlKhansa vocational institute-Taiz
Students were familiarised with core principles of debating and making persuasive arguments. Once again people were encouraged to express their views in the knowledge that they would be respected by all, however fierce debate was anticipated.
An initial poll was taken at the start and it indicated (10 for immigration-13 against) as such most of the group were against the principle of allowing people to leave Yemen to settle in another country. Many excellent arguments were made, both supporting the case for migration as well as against it.

Reasons discussed for allowing people to move from one country to another were:
· Freedom of choice
· To trade, or for business reasons
· For purposes of study and self improvements
· For advancement of the Muslim religion, religious study
· Any travel for a suitable reason
Some problems identified and discussed when fathers moved away for work were:
· Mothers had difficulty raising children (especially sons) alone
· Although fathers provided financially, emotional love and support was lacking
· A wife needed her husband and vice-versa and 5years apart was too long
After the submissions were completed, individuals voted (in an unseen) democratic fashion. The results were especially interesting as the debate had switched the initial view, and in fact the results were the reverse of the initial poll. The final result was in favour of allowing people to move freely from one country to another (For 13 votes-Against 10 votes).
Once again a very successful debate, which generated much analytical and critical thought, congratulations to all participants, and many thanks to Hakim and the institute (Tech Line ) for arranging another successful event.
