Debate: One Wife or More.

On the 10th of January 2011, a debate was held for a mixed group of approximately 20 students, the ratio of male to female students was about 50:50. The students attending were from various parts of the governorate and represented a diverse cross-section of Yemeni the  populace.

The Debate was run by Hakim British council Trainer and chaired by David van Doesburgh, a Barrister from the UK, currently teaching at Mohammed Ali Othman School in Taiz, it was also attended by Elizabeth Reeb German teaching in AlKhansa vocational institute-Taiz

Students were introduced to the principles of debating and given an understanding that although the topic was designed to be controversial everyone should feel safe to express their views without fear of intimidation.

A poll was taken at the start and it was apparent that the female students seemed against multiple wives, yet the male students were in favour of multiple wives. by the end of the debate a further poll was taken, and the majority of the group were in favour of more than one wife.

Despite the views of the group (majority) a good number of individuals held onto their beliefs (either for or against).

Congratulations to all participants, and many thanks to Hakim and the institute (Tech Line ) for arranging such a successful event.

I was involved in this debate as a guest, and found the experience absolutely fantastic.

The level of arguments made by the students within the group forum was excellent and many students managed to challenge their (and others) thinking and viewpoints.

In the presentation phase the students showed a thorough grasp and understanding of the concept and they argued many diverse positions.

The final result was interesting to me, as it indicated that the majority of the group were in favour of more than 1 wife.

I found this both interesting and surprising considering the views expressed within the actual debate.

Many thanks, and I look forward to further involvement.
